pixiewish
Just wondered if anyone can tell me at what age its ok to switch from chick grit to grit with shell in it? My girls are about 14 weeks now and I've just run out of chick grit so not sure which is best to buy. Also what are finishers pellets for? Do I switch to these before layers? Thanks
KateH
Hi, I'm no expert but I would probably not give the oyster shell grit until they were laying or very close to laying. When that would be depends on the breed of the chicken - hybrids tend to come into lay earlier in my experience. Having said that, when I've bought in 16week olds before I haven't given them any different grit to the big girls and it didn't seem to bother them! I'm pretty sure finishers is for meat birds. Usually for laying hens you go from growers to layers. I hold off on the layers again until actually laying or very close to as I read if you give it too early it can actually delay onset of lay. I'm sure someone more knowledgeable will be a long soon, they may be of more help!
