Bexter
2 f my ex-batts are getting pecked on (no pun intended!!)& have red backs(near the base of their tails).I have used anti-peck spray&purple spray but to no avail.Otherwise my ladies are happy&healthy,I would just like to solve the pecking. Have any omleteers used chicken saddles with any success?? Do they stay on??
Egghead68
I tried one but it kept falling off. Good luck.
Mrs_B
I am in a similar situation. I have used the sprays as well with no success. It is upsetting to see one of the top chooks sit on the bottom two and peck at them, pulling their feathers out I am now opting for saddles, and will be getting two when I visit the poultry farm today. I'll let you know how I get on! x
Egghead68
Have you both tried bumper bits? Might be the best solution.
Mrs_B
I don't feel I have enough confidence to put bumper bits on my hens, as I still feel very new. However someone in my family has offered if I need too - so I may end up doing that if the pecking gets too much/into a habit. I have tried butterfly saddles and I couldn't really work the velcro around the wings of my hens and they hated them and refused to move and just sat down. I just got some new standard ones, so will try those next - again will let you know how I get on!! x
Mrs_B
Apologies for the double post, but wanted to report on the saddles! Both the hens who've had them on have really benefited from wearing them. The new replacement feathers are able to come through without being pecked out and even one of my chooks which ended up with a small wound with blood was protected and she is now healing nicely. I think if I didn't have these saddles the process of stopping the pecking habit would've been much longer and the injured hen would have been much more vulnerable - so I would recommend giving the normal saddles a go! Still need to break the pecking habit, but I am much happier about the situation. Still can't comment on the butterfly saddles as the velcro just didn't want to work for me or the girls! I also got some extra saddles with fleece for winter if I need them... x
