Which is the best electric netting?

Recommended Posts

I am looking at getting either a 25m or 50m electric fencing kit, but I am just not sure on what brand to go for - it isn't clear to me with what I have looked into what one is the most effective or would suit my needs. I ideally would like to have the netting up the almost all the time and will have the Eglu Go and wooden coop inside, so all I need to do is open the run doors and the girls can enjoy the lawn and extra space!

I've been looking at buying a battery and charger separately - but if there is another method people use and think is really useful/easier than I am open for suggestions! :)

So what fencing do people use and was it worth the money spent? What is recommended? Also, if I use my current Omlet non electric netting to put inside if I need to separate any hens, will it be OK to touch the electric netting or does nothing touch the electrified netting at all?

Thank you!

I have 50m of 1.2m high electric netting from Hotline (although I believe I ordered it through another company) and 25m of electric Omlet fencing which I set up together to provide two separate areas but run from 1 energiser and battery.

The energiser is a Hotline Gemini 120 and I have 2 leisure batteries so one is on charge while the other is in use.

I think a fence of 1.2m height is best and you need to look for something with strong corner posts to help keep it taut. As regards dividing it with non-electric Omlet fencing, if this is all plastic with no metal bits touching the electric fence this should be possible but I am not familiar with this Omlet fencing so I can't say for sure.

I'm really pleased with my electric fence although it has not been cheap (but keeping chickens never seems to be  ) especially as I recently had to replace my energiser in a hurry at the weekend when it failed. Although Hotline do offer a very reasonable repair service but I couldn't afford to be without it for the 10 days that it took - on the plus side I now have a spare energiser.

I have found Hotline a very good company and extremely helpful especially in the early days of my fence when I had trouble setting it up, I would certainly recommend giving them a ring and discussing your requirements with them.

Hope this is of some help :) .

I agree with Eggasperated, that its best to get the 1.2m high netting from Hotline ... At the time of ordering I would also recommend getting 4 rigid corner posts to help make the fence nice and taut to eliminate sagging, as you dont want any of the live wires to touch the ground.

I purchased the Xtra Shock Little Deamon Energiser, which is mains only, and which I think is very well priced at £37.50 .. Im (like Eggasperated) going to order a spare very soon, as ive always been a bit concerned it might go faulty and leave my lovely hens unprotected!

I think it might also be a good idea to order a fence tester, because for the first couple of weeks I was always worrying whether it was actually working or not, and I certainly wasnt going to test it  So now ive got the tester I dont have to be concerned anymore :D
