Blue44
Great excitement, a small egg appeared in the nest box yesterday which I assume came from one of my young silkies they are 6.5 months old now. And then this morning another tiny egg along with a larger one which I know came from my older hen. My question...would a youngster lay two eggs in a row when they have just started to lay (I would have assumed it would be a bit sporadic beign new to it and all) or could it be a coincidence that another youngster starts to lay the very next day...can't wait for tomorrow. cyclonetog
When my 2 Pekins started to lay, they were perfectly in sync for about 2 weeks. I either got 2 eggs or none. Having got used to it, it was really disappointing to find just one, at first I thought it had been stolen because I was so used to seeing 2! (neighbours cat sometimes steals an egg and drops it on their back doorstep).
dance in the dark
I think it can vary. My transylvanian naked neck came in to lay and laid perfect, hard shelled eggs for the next six days! She then had a day off, and in theory continues to lay well. But since the end of June she had a two week broody spell, and is currently in another one which is getting to the tail end of three weeks..... Similarly when my Orpingtons started to lay they were consistent straight away. Hybrids in my experience are more likely to begin with erratic egg production, once my pure breeds start laying there just lay. Although you do have to wait longer for them to mature.....
