I have a feeling the babies are just not right!!

Recommended Posts

Hi, So it's just a hunch/feeling that my 14 & 16 week babies are off colour. Martha has been making a sort of "phut" noise for a couple of days and I had discovered red mite in the wooden coop a couple of days earlier. So I had dusted the coop with diatom and red mite powder and wonder if this had upset her & the others. Got the pink red mite kill now to throughly do their coop tomorrow weather permitting!!!

They look well, bright eyed no discharge anywhere and love to come out on the grass (nibbling it to within an inch of it's life!!!!) but are off their pellets I think (feeder not going down so fast) It is difficult as I am back to work after 2 weeks off and work long days and don't really see them much now. Crops didn't seem full tonight, but I might be being paranoid!!! Also, I haven't wormed them yet. Was really hoping it would be just a cold/ sniffles.

Worrying as my adults got a respiratory thing days/few weeks after I got them last oct as growers and this is giving me the same uneasy feeling their behaviour did then!!! They went on baytril and recovered.

Just to complicate things I'm due to pick up some long awaited araucana growers on sat!!!!! They will be going in to the quarrantine ark with run.

So it's fri tomorrow......what do you think I should do??? My vets are okish but not chicken savy. I do have nutri drops and have been adding the nettex tonic to their water as they are shedding baby feathers, they always have a garlic glove in their drinker and I add acv only a week in 4.

Please any thoughts????? Really can't face losing another pekin this year. :(

You know your chicks better than anyone and, if you feel that something may be wrong, I would take them to the vet for a check up. It will put your mind at rest if nothing is wrong and, even if the vet is not chicken savvy, they will be able to diagnose an infection if that is the problem.

Good luck with them.

Thanks Tweety,

I solved the mystery, ARRGH it's red mite!!! The coop will be a year old in a couple of weeks and had been empty for nearly 6 months. I thought the coop had a mild case (I spotted it at the weekend & had been puffing diatom and red mite powder) So I'd got the total mite kill and today was d-day for clean the coop!!!!

So I put the babies out with their food and water, well they were suddenly very keen on their pellets!!! So as the feeder was under the coop they were avoiding it!!!!! Oh I felt so bad when I figured out why they were off their food  And no wonder I doused the coop and they crawled out of everywhere, YUK :vom:

I spent the whole morning on the coop, cleaning it out, spraying it and then left it to air (couldn't take it appart though :(:( ) as much in the sunshine as poss. Then puffed it with diatom. Babies really didn't want to go to bed!!!

I just hope I've caught it in time not to have a BIG problem........but not convinced. Well in a couple of months the girls can go in the cube with the adults, just have to keep it under contro; till then.
