Hi,

We're building a walk in run for our chickens (we only have 2 at the moment, but once we've built the run I want a couple more. So we'll probably have 4 total).

I've read online that the minimum space per chicken is 1m2 - but that seems really small to me.

The run is going to be 3.6 x 3.6 m so that's 12 and a bit m2. Their coop is raised up on stilt like legs so that won't affect floorspace.

The roof is only going to be half waterproof (i.e. 3.6 x 1.8 waterproof sheeting, 3.6 x 1.8 only weld mesh & wood) so based on previous experience half of it will end up pretty muddy at times.. I have seen people have built mezzanine areas and included branches etc for added interest, so will try and incorporate that into the run too.

The chickens used to have an even bigger run (but with no roof) but we've moved house and our garden is smaller and there's a bigger fox risk so we're making it extra secure (I suppose that's what you get from moving from a village to central town!!). Plus got fed up of the pigeons eating the chicken food!!!

I was wondering if those with permanent walk in runs would consider 12m2 enough for 4 chickens. The most important thing is that they're happy!

Thanks

Kate
