Chicken Licken

school chickens

Recommended Posts

After much risk assessing, last monday I moved 4 chickens into the school where I work, along with my eglu and 3m run. After a week in the run I gave them the chance of a free range in their very secure, very expensive, security fence enclosed enclosure and went off to teach kids and go about my job! Within 2 hours they were roaming the school site!! Anyway - we now know that they can squeeze through the bars of the fence - back to the drawing board.

We have however had our first 2 eggs :D:D:D

I had to risk assess fully, provide evidence of the supplier of the girls and all the vaccinations they have had, train up a couple of helpers and prove that my experience of keeping chooks made me a 'competent person'. I had to provide all the data safety sheets for the cleaning products etc - just seemed like a lot of hoops to jump through! but actually makes sense to cover our backs.

The planis that my year 10s will care for the chooks as part of a module of 'small animal care' and take responsibility for the girls. We plan to sell our eggs to pay for the upkeep of the girls. However the guidance I am working to is much tighter than Defra require!! I see it as a means to an end. The kids are all fascinated by the girls and I'm sure we will make them a success :D:D
