Roselady
Hi all Apologies if this has been covered before but I can't find the answers! 2 of our chooks have recently come into lay. Our little pekin has laid a perfect egg everyday since last Tues, barr one day! Our araucana hybrid laid her first on Sun which was soft, and has since laid 2 more softies during the night. Her poos are very runny too. Is this normal? They are on Fancy Feed layers and I've also put a pot of mixed grit in too - prior to this they just had ordinary grit. Oh, and this morning, when cleaning out the droppings trays, I noticed that Big Bird's (hybrid) had a slightly pinkish tinge to the white cap - doesnt look like blood though. Thanks
wannabe smallholder
Not sure about the softies but the pink poo sounds normal ish. Sometimes they produce a salmon pink coloured poo over night and sometimes shed a little intestinal residue, all normal. There is a link on here about poo, its got pictures and makes you realise that there is a huge range of normal! Hope someone comes along soon to advise about softies. good_egg
Good chicken poo link here http://chat.allotment.org.uk/index.php?topic=17568.0 - I had it bookmarked for the first while! Suspect the pink ones you mention are the coral urates. Eggs wise I have only had one chook successfully come into lay - she started with tiny fragile eggs that gradually got stronger. I think they usually take a while to adjust and as long as they are on layers and have access to oyster shell then wouldn't worry. That said if she is looking poorly (hunched, tail drooped) then have a feel of her tummy.
Roselady
Hi Wannabe and Good Egg Thanks very much for the replies. Looked at the link and its definitely the coral urate one, so feel better about that now! Big Bird doesn't look hunched or poorly and she is eating for Britain at the moment! Will have to wait and see how she does. Will keep you posted. Litte Bren Pekin stood and shouted at me next to the nest box this morning as I was changing the bedding as she was waiting to lay!
