Chicken Washing

Recommended Posts

Now when I went to the auction last weekend I came home with another wee white Barbu d'Anvers to keep PeeWee company as the residents of the Bantie Kingdom still dislike her but readily accepted her other to keep her company friend Costa. (Complicated I know).

However on closer inspection on getting home I found that the newbie is not alone and has a lice troupe about her person, so I dusted her liberally with diatom and obtained some Harkermektin/Ivermectin and treated her with that on Sunday. Poor little thing is still in isolation and still has no name (open to ideas). Treatments seem to be taking effect I'm pleased to say.

Anyway my long winded query is, can I bathe her in dog flea shampoo to help get rid of the lice eggs or are they allergic to it, the bird not the lice?

:talk2hand: You don't need to tell me about buying at auction. I enjoyed it at the time and am pleased with her just not her little friends. Still itchy now, never washed and changed my outfit so often in a day.

Jonhsons Anti Mite Spray (from pet shops or off tinternet) is good, make sure you do under the wings and between the legs. And at the same time look round at the feathers of her bum. If it appears there are clumps of white poo stuck to the shafts of her feathers there, then those will be clumps of lice eggs. Get some rounded end scissors and carefully cut them away and make sure you burn them, then spray her again in a few days time.

Its making me itch just typing this

I've had great success with dog shampoo and mites. I would go down that route myself after having used ivermectin too.

You'll want it to be pretty warm and use an indoor cage or blow dryer to get her dry and warm at this time of year.

Don't fret about them still being separate: ideally you want to leave them in isolation for a couple of weeks before integrating a new purchase and that's particualarly true of a chook bought at auction. You want to look for signs of myco etc that can come out with stress and spare your existing girls that.

Good luck with her!

Today has been lovely and warm so have given her a flea shampoo wash and blow dry. I only came across 1 louse while drying her and believe me I was really looking for them. She doesn't seem too upset by it and is back to eating and drinking and re-arranging her feathers. That grubby slighty greasy look has gone and she's got more of that Barbu look about her.

Have decided to call her Kazoo as that's what she sounds like. Tried out Julie as a Belgian translation was 'downy bearded youth' but then I realised my neighbour is Julie and may not find it quite as funny.

I've got 2 Quail Barbu D'Anvers, 2 Lavender Quail Barbu D'Anvers and 2 Columbian Barbu de Watermael who all get quite mucky  but wash up beautifully :) They love being dried with the hairdryer
