MRI scans for dogs. Pros and cons

Recommended Posts

Daisy our Yorkie has had 2 worrying episodes and is now on epiphen for life. Her seizures are partial but continuous and on both occasions has needed emergency veterinary intervention to stabilise her. She was having routine bloods today and the vet suggested that it might be a good idea to refer her to the Glasgow Vet School for an MRI scan to try to find the root cause of these seizures. I'm currently checking with her insurers T****s to see the extent of her policy. However I was wondering if there are any reasons why I shouldn't have this done or indeed overwhelming reasons why I should.

Didn't really expect this. Poor little Daisy. Alli x

Have just spoken to her insurers. They will pay for a scan prob about £2000, but that will only leave £1700 to deal with Daisy's condition for the rest of her life. I think I'll need to find the cost of routine bloods and how often they will be carried out annually before I decide, unless there are over riding reason why she should/shouldn't be scanned. Ahhhhh I just hate having to make these sorts of decisions. Alli x

lovely vet got back in touch & we had a chat about costs. She reckons that routine costs of blood tests, liver function tests and meds will be in the region of £500 - £800 / year. Therefore if we have the scan her insurance will pay for a year/2years treatment at most. However vets have said her seizures are unusual and would like us to have the scan, so I think I probably will. Alli x
