Constant softies

Recommended Posts

Hi all

Looking for a bit of advice (again!)

My young araucana hybrid pullet came into lay on 13th Sept. She has only laid 7 hard shelled eggs in that time - 4 of which have been double yolkers.

For the last 8 days she's been laying 2 softies per night - I always find them in the run in the morning, but sometimes she does it at teatime in front of me.

I've read all the info on here about it and she has Fancy Feed Layers and oystershell grit in a separate container. My little pekin who is laying (currently broody  ) lays perfect eggs everytime so Im doubting its a calcium deficiency in their diet?

She seems fine in every other way but I'm worried that it could be an underlying health concern, or is it because she is a commercial hybrid? Had to clean up her behind last night it was a bit mucky with albumen (I think)

thanks

Hello, Roselady! :)

Poor you! One of my hens is softie prone and she has a few days of laying a couple a day. I put in a calcium supplement in the food as well as cooked egg shells in a tray of treats (maybe in some yoghurt or scrambled eggs) even if the others are laying good hard shelled eggs.

I have heard that limestone flour is a good substitute for calcium too, though I haven't tried it myself!

Good luck and I hope she improves. If she doesn't stop laying the softies after a while, I would take her to the vet as she could be poorly and the softies could be a symptom.
