Pekin Bantams in an Eglu Classic II

Recommended Posts

Hi,

I have not been on the forum for a while but have recently reserved 3 little pekin bantam girls to pick up in a couple of weeks.

I have just the standard 2m run, will this be sufficient? Are there any other considerations to take into account with these little birds (only had hybrids up to now).

Many thanks

Hannah :)

P.s. I did mean to add that I plan to buy the long clear cover for the run to try and keep it dryer for their feathery feet.

Hi there,

I have five little pekin pantams in the eglu go. The eglu itself seems to be fine for them, they all snuggle up at night in one corner and there is lots of room.

I originally had the 2m run and let them free range for a couple of hours during the day, but last week I bought an extension (3m in total) and this seems much better.

I have one clear rain cover for the initial 2m, and then have put my sun shade over the last part which seems pretty waterproof.

A 2m run will be fine for 3 pekins. Pekins are usually pretty robust as far as bantams go but need slightly more care than hybrids due to their feathered feet. They need to be kept out of mud and the legs need to be checked every so often as breeds with feathery feet can be more prone to scaley leg mite. Good luck getting them :)

Thanks for the info/advise.

I think I will stick with the 2m run for the moment, was thinking or buying the extension now, but I will save my money for now and put it towards a little walk in run for them later...

They will of course be allowed free ranging time when we are home, but with the evenings drawing in it is becoming less and less - also I will have to see if they intergrate ok free ranging with my boisterous hybrids (the garden is plenty large enough!), otherwise I will come up with some way of fencing off an area for them, but it won't be fox proof so I would not want to leave them in that area early in the morning when I leave for work etc...

I've got 2 Pekins and a bantam Orpington in an Eglu Classic with 2m run and they're OK - they free range for a couple of hours every day. Although I do have to admit that, with days getting shorter, we have started building a walk in run for them as I would like them to have extra space. Mind you, my bantam Orp is quite a bit bigger than my Pekins - I'd be happy with my set up for 3 Pekins.
