How / why does a chicken catch a cold ?

Recommended Posts

How did my lovely Queenie catch a cold in the first place ?

Was it something I did or didn't do ?

They have tonic in their water and I have a bottle of cider vinegar waiting too.

I know it has been very damp lately, and the fluffy footers will insist on playing in the cat box when I have put fresh sawdust in :shameonu: . But I change the sawdust, well shavings stuff, regularly and keep everything clean, so I don't really get it. And how come none of the others have got it ?

Hm, sounds weird because just one is affected, but what usually happens is one hen catches the cold then passes it round. How, i'm not that sure but it depends how they're sheltered. Free range? Run with roof? Run without roof? How long have you had the hen for? If she is quite new to your flock, it could of come from the breeder, but if not, that's obviously not relevent info...

What breed of dog is in your picture? its lovely! :D

Hi Will,

Thanks for that. I've had Queenie since she was 6 weeks old and she is now 25 ish weeks, so the germs definitely didn't come from the breeder. The breeder I got them from is very good and knows her stuff and I would certainly get chicks from her again.

As for my dog in the pic, she is Daisy, our almost 16 year old cocker spaniel.

And Egluntyne, thank you too.

It is just Queenie that is affected, maybe because I removed her so quick the others didn't catch it. Who knows where it came from, but at last she is on the mend.
