Dog help please

Recommended Posts

for DD. Her dog has had a week in kennels whilst they were on holiday. Since they've been back he's now barking and howling very loudly when he's left on his own. It's also very, very loud :shock: Previously since puppy stage he's been fine.

Said I'd ask on here for help as I haven't got a clue. Hoping there's an easyish solution as her partner has severe gastroenteritis (sp?) and has already spent four days in hospital plus she's got Lauren at seven months old who is crawling and only sleeping for about 10 mins when she has a nap in the day and now this with the dog................

I did wonder if it was just a case of going out for one minute then going straight back to him, then two etc etc

Thanks :)

Yes, you are right, sounds like a case of separation anxiety (SA) I would gradually lengthen leaving times, not making a fuss when you go out. Leaving with a kong full of treats helps to distract them too, also leave the dog in (say) the kitchen while you do things around the house so that it gets used to it's own company.

There's plenty of good advice online if you look, but the best thing you can do is not to over-compensate by mitering the dog, try to ignore it a bit more or it will become clingy and the SA will be worse.

When we first got our shih tzu puppy a couple of months ago she was awful with the whining when left alone. I would put her in her playpen so I could go and do my housework and she would just cry and it was horrible listening to her. I just used to make sure I came back to the room every few minutes and if she was still whining I would ignore her and just walk around the room, then go back and carry on with what I was doing. If she was quiet when I went back in the room I would praise her and in no time at all she was fine. As has already been mentioned to give him something to chew is a good idea too, ours loves to chew on her pizzle stick in her playpen :D
