Feed best before date

Recommended Posts

in my experience, they don't have a very long shelf life (but then I've only used a couple of organic brands, which may be different).

I bought some this week with a similar sell-by, which is pretty typical (also shows a packing date which was sometime in October)

That does mean I only buy the 5kg bags for my 2 chooks

Thanks Merlina,

If that's the case I'll have to start buying smaller bags from somewhere too. Shame as it works out pricier.

And what a coincidence, as I typed that sentence, I got a phone call from Marriage's who I emailed for info about this the other day. Very helpful chap told me that the feed from production has a shelf life of about 3 months and it's not unusual for it to be a week in their warehouse before going out to stockists.

He said they dont currently do smaller than 20kg bags in their organic feed, as they are still gauging the market for smaller bags, but maybe it's something they'll do in the future.

Its usually around three months but can vary from brand to brand, the bags of Garvo I buy can have months and months before the expiry date

Never been a problem round here with several bags a week being used though

If its layers pellets personally I would still use it beyond the expiry date as long as its dry, been stored in the dark and smells fresh and not 'beery' or musty, I dont think I would push it beyond a month or so though

I would never use expired feed for chicks or growers though
