smartrus
I am posting this question on behalf of my sister in law who also has chickens. She has a hen who has scaly bleeding legs, losing weight and feathers. It sounds like red mite to me but what do you think??
mimi5
Hi ,it could also be a bad case of scaly leg mite. My 2 girls had a mild case of it earlier this year after brooding chicks. I used the net-tex scaly leg product which got rid of it. I would act quickly as it is very painful for the bird.
zakjon-98
I agree it sounds like scaly leg mite. Some people recommend covering the legs in vaseline but there are mixed reviews on this so I would stick to a scaly leg product as mimi5 suggested. mimi5
Hope your sister-in-law gets her girl sorted out! She should keep an eye out on her other girls for signs of it too. Best wishes
Tweety
Sudocrem is very good for dealing with scaly leg mite too.
smartrus
Ooh really? She has plenty of that! Will let her know! Thanks.
Redwing
Sudocreme is good as it not only smothers the mites it contains Benzyl Benzoate which will kill them too The weight loss and lack of feathers sounds just like a moult, its about the right time if year and some react worse than others to the moult. The scaley legs can also be connected as they also moult their leg scales and some will peck at the loose scales making them bleed but the sudocreme will not do any harm anyway
