I have bought some white maggots as a special treat for my girls and I had read that they are good for them and digestive health. I have given them a few hand fulls and they have gone berserk for them!!! I have never given them maggots before so I am not sure how many they can have. I have put the rest of the tub in the fridge and I was wondering if any of you know how long I can keep them for as it is a pretty big tub and is it ok to give some to the wild birds on the bird table? thanks

So long as you keep them cold they'll last for a few days. I'd restrict their intake a bit though.

Our girls absolutely love them too! It is so funny to watch!

Mine prefer live mealworms, but they are smaller bird, so it's probably that maggots are a bit big for them.

If one of my girls is off colour, I find a handful of maggots is the best way to get them perky again.

 

They are a good source of protein so great for moulting girls too. Also useful for an impacted crop (or is that a myth)?

 

I restrict them to a handful or two a day as a treat between 9 hens (more for solitary poorlies).

Not at all, when combined with oil and a thrice daily crop massage, they can help to clear a blockage.
