Shelley
Our two remaining chucks haven't laid for months now; we've had them coming up for three years so presumed their laying days were over. A few days ago it was apparent one of them was ailing and last night she wouldn't go into the coop and so I left her in the run while putting the other one away. Went out this morning and, as feared, she had died where I'd left her and after tidying her body away opened the coop door to let the other girlie out. And there, inside, was the largest egg you've ever seen. What on earth is going on? It surely can't just be coincidence - it literally is three or four months since we've had an egg out of either of them. But if the two events are connected, how did the one inside know her pal had died? Utterly perplexing
suebee
How strange... It seems nature has a way of moving things along, one way... or the other... Sorry you lost your girl x

Redwing
I would imagine that one was always laying and the other was eating the eggs
Chortle Chook
I think the egg could really have been a coincidence. My hens have been laying really badly for the past few months which I've put down to molting and / or the weather, but someone has suddenly started laying again and, oddly, larger eggs that previously. How sad though about the death of your hen - hugs to you. Do you now only have the one hen and will you just let this one see her days out or will you get others?
