I have half a jar of instant coffee which is in date but has gone hard. Anyone know any tricks to resurect it? Coffee is pricey and dont want to throw unless absolutely necc. Have been chisteling away with a spoon

Whenever my brown sugar goes hard, I put a slice of apple in the bag with it for a couple of hours. Not sure if it will have the same effect with coffee, though

 

Apart from that, have you tried a Google search?

How hard has it gone? If it's not too bad, you could try using a stick blender (if it'll fit through the neck of the jar), or you could chip it into small enough lumps to extricate the whole lot, then put it in a spice mill and whizz for a short while. Neither option is really resurrecting the coffee; merely reducing it back to powder again, but it should make it more manageable.

 

Oh, and if you whizz it in situ, make sure you wrap the jar in a tea towel first so you can get a good grip on it.

I find when coffee has gone hard it never taste the same again! I now keep transfer whatever brand of coffee I buy into a old coffee jar (douwe Egberts) which keeps a good seal and keeps my coffee fresh.

It can do this if it is kept too warm, it happened to me when I had a jar on the bottom of a wall cupboard that had lights under it and it kept getting too warm, fine now that I have moved it up a shelf. It is hard to do anything with it once it has gone like that and it usually tastes pretty awful too.

I would top the jar up with boiling water,drink it,then you can sprint all the way to the supermarket to get a new jar

 

Maddening though when that happens,isn't it?

I treated myself to a really good sealed coffee jar last year to keep it fresh.
