jellyb100
Hi We have had a chicken laying since friday although we haven;t seen who! We had assumed that it was Doris as she is bigger and her comb etc is bigger and redder. She has also been crouching for quite a while now. However, before we went to work this morning Frankie had sat herself in the nest box...there was an egg waiting for us when we got home. If it is her, i'm concerned for Doris - she has been crouching for ages so why hasn't she layed? Also I have noticed some different kind of poos around their run and part of the garden - they look sort of yolky (but not like an egg). I had assumed that they were normal as it says somehting about them on the omlet site However, i'm now worried that she is having problems. She eats and drinks fine and she moves and scratches around without any problems. Any ideas?
Snowy
'yolky' poos are normal. They seem to be a by product of getting ready to lay. Something like 1 poo in 10 is like this. And it might be Doris laying and frankie getting ready to lay. When they are building up to it, they will often go and sit on the nest box for a while, probably having a practice run! You'll just have to sit and watch them all day. Oh wait, don't we do that anyway??
jellyb100
Thanks, you have set my mind at rest! I know what i'll be doing this weekend!
chrisnrob
If it is her, i'm concerned for Doris - she has been crouching for ages so why hasn't she layed? Of our two, Greta is bigger with a larger, redder comb. Her and Audrey started 'squating' at the same time. However, Audrey started laying a full 10 days before Greta. We thought that Greta would be first and were surprised when she was so far behind. That said, they're both laying regularly now I'm sure there's nothing to worry about! Egluntyne
If she is otherwise fine I shouldn't worry. The "yolky" poos are as Snowy says, about 1 in 10 and are caused by the caecum emptying its contents.
jellyb100
We have had two eggs today!!! Perhaps Frankie was practising! It's sooo tiny, and Doris (i think) has laid a HUGE egg. The two darker ones were laid yesterday and Tuesday, and the big one and tiny one today.
Guest
That's brilliant and they tiny egg layer will gradually lay bigger eggs. The first year they are usually smaller
lisa33
Don't be surprised if that larger one is a double yolker. My girl all lay and every now and then we'll get one that's huge. Each time it has been a doubler.
