welovemarmite
I want to put some raspberrys on my allotment, but am going to need to put some sort of fruit cage up. THe local birds are very hungry!! I can't afford to buy a posh one and looking at making my own. I know i could cobble something together with some bits of wood and nails, but wonderered if anyone else had any pearls of wisdom? Also the best place to get cheap netting from. Thanks
sjp
cheapest way is debris netting (the green neeting you see on the outside of scaffolding on building sites if you ask any scafolder when they are takeing it down they let you have as much as you want it less for them to try to re-use it's not that dear to buy new ) drapped over the fruit once it starts to ripen held down with large stone or house bricks but to be honest not many of my plot holder bother to cover raspberries as there are that many bushes on the site that thry don't loose that many
Redwing
Agree that debris netting is very good, you can get small amounts on ebay. Knowles nets also do cheap netting For a cheap fruit cage you could use the very cheap plastic covered tubular 'greenhouses' like this: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gardman-Tomato-Growbag-Growhouse-Mini-Greenhouse-/271148385384?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item3f21b40468 Or canes attached together with these: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/10-x-Flexi-Build-Block-Ball-Cane-Connectors-Fruit-Cage-Netting-Plant-Support-/281057540755?pt=UK_H_G_Garden_Plants_Landscaping_Garden_Materials_ET&hash=item417055ba93
welovemarmite
thanks, think the greenhouse idea is good but too small for what i want. the cane idea might not work either. Last year my runner bean wigwam was destroyed by cross winds...
Looney
My parents used reclaimed Harris fencing to build a tall frame and covered it with netting. Works a treat, though my dad added a door somehow or other...
