alet_chicken
We would really like to get a couple (=three) cream legbar chicks and grow them on ourselves. I have been planning this for a couple of months now but unfortunately the breeder I was going to get them from has not been hatching as expected due to the weather (I don't blame them). I checked the Omlet recommended breeds list and the nearest suitable breeder appears to be Storrs poultry in Barnsley. I would prefer somewhere closer if possible, so, before I give them a ring, I was hoping for help with the following question... Can anybody recommend a breeder near York / Thirsk (or inbetween!) who breeds legbars and is likely to hatch in the near future? I would be happy to travel a bit (say, an hour or so) to pick them up. TooLilac
Hi Alet_C, I was after some legbars a couple of weeks ago but got some different clucks in the end. Claire @ Brackenholme Hall near Selby did have some CLBs but they may have gone (this was two weeks ago). Just google Brackenholme Hall for her website. There is also Emma at the Rainbow Egg Company near keighley. She has CLBs and some hybrid rainbow layer chicks. I don't think Emma has a website, but she has a FB page. How you manage to get some as they are lovely little birds with such cheeky & nosey characters! We have one left and she's a little minx. Egluntyne
I've been going to Bank View Farm in Sheffield recently for all things hen related.. It is a bit of a schlep for you - but easier to get to than Storrs, which is at the end of a nightmare single track road at least a mile long. Their hens are beautiful and very well looked after, and Rachel is very knowledgeable and helpful. They have Cream Legbars as a rule. alet_chicken
A belated thank you for your advice. I'm waiting to hear from both Bank View Farm and the Rainbow Egg Company (which is a bit closer to us) and hope to get chicks sorted one way or the other soon. It seems that the bank holiday has slowed things down a bit, but at least it gives me a chance to get hold of a heat lamp etc in time. heth1986
Another thumbs up for Bank View Farm here Worth the extra few miles in my opinion... I bought my 3 legbar girls from her as day olds and they have been a treasure. They're turning into beautiful ladies, lovely and friendly and remarkably calmer than what I was expecting! The lady who runs the farm is also very helpful and easy to get along with. She will sell you fertilised eggs / chicks / pullets / point of lay and even offered to take any cockerels from me when I was thinking of hatching my own. All of the chickens there are well cared for (all pure breeds are hatched and reared by her) and I shall be popping back there tomorrow to add to my trio .
