kittyl
I've put 7 replacement eggs in the incy today, and my little Pekin has gone broody today aswell. I've put her in a broody coop & run, sitting on a couple china eggs for now. I plan to put 4 of the new eggs under her tomorrow, but keep the other 3 in the incy so we can watch them grow, then slip them to her in the last few days to finish off. It was so cold tonight I was worried about her being in the coop on her own, I put a thick towel over the roof & some brush screening around it for insulation. I'm wondering if she will be able to keep the eggs warm enough in this weather. As it looks like its going to stay cold through April (may even be more snow!) I'm also wondering if the chicks will cope with being outside even if they are with a warm foster mum - (I usually start them off in a small run inside the main run which is sheltered.) I was so looking forward to having a broody to hatch the eggs, but I wonder if I'm making a mistake in this extreme "spring" weather, or am I wittering for nothing? What do other people do in the cold weather?
Redwing
The broody will be fine as long as she has shelter
Purplemaniacs
A friend of mine lost one of her chooks in the very cold snowy weather earlier in the year, chook appeared a few weeks later complete with a set of little chicks, she had made herself a cosy nest in one the out buildings, she must have nipped out for some food when G was not looking Chrissie
kittyl
Thanks, that's reassuring, I'm making sure her part of the run is sheltered from these cold winds. This morning she got out & went walkabout and I found her sitting on her favourite plastic egg in the other nestbox!, so I've put it back in with her - whatever makes her happy
