My WIR is on a single layer of paving slab & I have never  had a problem with rats getting into the run. I get field mice coming in on an evening through the mesh & the girls just sit watching them.

Thanks that's good to know

Did you do anything to the ground before putting the slabs down. I've got some sand to put down.

I created an area of compacted soil, then added a layer (3" to 4") of soft sand, then laid the slabs on that. That was in 2009, it's still flat and level today and we've never had rats get into the run (we have had them try this year for the first time though, we think because it was so cold over winter and they were desperate for food). They have been 'dealt with' now and are no longer a problem.

Brilliant thanks

That was really useful and makes me realise that the slab part is much more straightforward then I thought
