Britannia Ovens (esp Range cookers) your experience

The bumpa bits I needed finally arrived and earlier, with some help, put one on Melody and one on Myrtle.

As soon as Melody was free, she scratched at it and it came out. So she was quickly caught and had it put back in.

 

 

 

This how it looks. Their beaks are open and their tongues underneath.

They didn't seem very impressed. I threw them some corn to take their minds of things but they didn't seem able to eat any.

I'm worried I might have put them in wrong.

Whats the difference between the two ? Is one better at stopping pecking than the other ?

 

When I let them out this morning they still had them on, and they are still on now. I just hope the beak ring stops them from being so spiteful and viscious.

Both work, although a bumper bit is a bit better as it protrudes beyond the end of the beak and prevents them using the end of the beak to peck as well and stopping them from grabbing feathers. The photo below shows one properly fitted:

Yeah, I did think that she can still hurt with the tip of her beak with the ring on.

I did have some of those black bumper bits for my old Miss Pepperpot, but can't find them anywhere.

 

I'll have to hope these do the trick for now.

The black ones are harder to put on but worth using if you can lay your hands on them.

Hmmm, I had a problem with this before - trying to find smaller bumpa bits for bantams.

Myrtle and Melody are bigger bantams, but not big chickens, so what size bumper bit do I need ?

 

I really couldn't find different sized bumper bits before.

Can anyone tell me the best place to get them from ?
