Adding new chickens to a lonely bluebell

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone,

I hope someone can advise me. Over the last few weeks we have lost two out of three of our chickens. We now have a hybrid Bluebell (named Bluebell) living on her own, for the first time in the eglu. She is nearly 4 years old and I was hoping to add two new young chickens to the eglu.

Many thanks.

There's a really good post about the proper way to do it here

I was in a similar position and had one remaining hen.

What I did was put the three newbies (POL) I bought in the coop with her when I got home as it was late and everyone was sleepy.

I was up very bright and early the next day to see how they were getting along!

There were squabbles, but nothing at all serious. Mostly they all seemed very indignant to be shoved in with each other, but no-one hurt anyone. I did let Edna (existing chook) out for some FR time on her own.

Within a week or so they were all best mates and running round happily together :)

Perhaps I was very lucky, but if you're confident about the health of your new chooks and you have a way of separating them if all doesn't go well (I had an eglu Go standing by) it might be worth trying?

The three POL hens I introduced didn't 'know' each other so I reckoned there wouldn't be issues with anyone ganging up on anyone else
