Help! New Eglu owner needs advice

Recommended Posts

Just have a word with your neighbours. I was expecting some objections but as soon as I told them they said, "Great idea wish we had the room" The only point raised was noise and that was in respect of cockrels as soon as they found out it was just hens they had no problem. Most people are easy going.

All the entries above are 'good stuff'. We had just the same fears but there have been no problems of noise or smell. Each night we close the Eglu door after they have put themselves to roost and reopen it in the morning. The nearest to noise is when they go in at night I would swear that they are moving furniture. Any moment I expect a roosting bar to be chucked out! :D

To combat any possibility of smell we use Citronella oil (recommended to us by users on this site) available from Holland and Barratt amongst other places. It seems a bit pricey at £4+ for a tiny bottle but you will only need a couple of drops in the run and maybe one in the litter tray perhaps every other day - in our experience. It helps too if you empty the tray and put in fresh newspaper or whatever you choose every 1 or 2 days.

Enjoy your chickens, we do - and it was my wife's idea...... :!:

don't worry, I have 13 chooks in Zone 1. Not a problem. You'll find the best source of most stuff in London is your local city farm, have a google. Otherwise, PetsatHome stores are also pretty good....Garlic powder is a must though. I'm out, and BOY do I know it.

Thanks for all your replies. Eglu arrival has been postponed until 30th August, but will let you know how we get along when they arrive!

Best wishes,

Nicky.

Commiserations. That is so upsetting when you are all geared up.

I hope they had good reason.

We found at the last minute that we could only have 1 variety of hen which was bad enough but at least we got some and the Eglu on time.

I tend to make my own grit now, when i have used a few eggs, i mash up all the egg shells and bake them for about 20mins in the oven, once cooked i crush them up again, and mix them up with some sweetcorn or spagetti and throw it out for the girls, x

Good luck , they are the one of the best pets going, xx
