jjmack
Hi, looking for someone who has some experience with FSGS (a progressive kidney disease) and transplants. My OH has had FSGS for over 30 years but it has progressed very slowly but it now speeding up and hes beginning to get to end stage renal failure. He is still well and doesn't cause him any problems apart from having to take lots of pills. Dr says they try to get a transplant before dialysis as thats gold standard. Does anyone have any experience? We've know that this would be in the future, but it as progressing so slowly we'd kind of stuck our heads in the sand. Thanks J
Lavenders_Blue
Sorry this probably isn't much help, but a friend of mine had a kidney transplant in his late teens after a few years of dialysis. I am not sure what caused his kidneys to fail. His new kidney absolutely transformed his life and he has spent much of the time since travelling the world, seeing new places. It doesn't prevent him doing anything (unlike the dialysis, which was very restrictive). Truly amazing. He is really passionate about organ donation (especially kidney!) as he knows what a huge difference it has made to his life.
jjmack
Thank you for that, I know they really do transform lives and kidneys are one of the more common ones. How old is your friend now? Obviously the transplanted kidney only has a certain life span.We know it is likely it will have to be done and there are so many option including live donation. Its is something like this that makes you realise how important carrying the card is. I have been on the donor register since I was 18 ( a long time ago!) everyone should be. Lavenders_Blue
He is 31 now. I can't remember exactly how old he was when he had the transplant, about 18 I think. He was told he would likely need another in his 40's, but obviously it just depends how things go. His kidney was donated by his Dad... I don't think that will be a possibility next time around somehow!
jjmack
Obviously I would offer but unlikely to be a match, but I think I can be a living donor for someone else and their living donor can donate to my OH. We're still a way off but its drawing nearer
