freya_chick Posted June 7, 2013 Share Posted June 7, 2013 Today is day 21 and no signs of hatching Wendy has been such a diligent mum, I feel bad for her! Has anyone successfully introduced chicks under a broody and pretended that they were the hatched eggs? Will the hen take to them? Not 100% given up but fearing the worst! sjp Posted June 8, 2013 Share Posted June 8, 2013 I had a bad hatch early May 1 out of 7 hatched and I had to get a couple of day olds the lone chick was 4 days old my broody accepted the 2 new chicks straight away but she's an experienced broody plus she wasn't happy with just one chick. She's been a mum before so she should know what she's doing, and maybe that would make it easier for her to adopt some chicks. First time for me though so I'm typical first time bag of nerves! She's doing loads of shuffling around at the moment, some time sitting on them, sometimes not at all - I'm hoping that means something but really, all I've got is hope! I can't hear any noises apart from her crooning every now and again! How long do you think I should leave it before deciding enough is enough? Thanks Freya it's a difficult call as to when to call it a day some folk have had chicks hatch 3 or 4 days late. I'd candle them myself tonight or tomorrow it give you the chance to check the eggs over to make shore that none are leaking i.e. rotten I had one that had gone bad in my failed hatch last month that was only a day or 2 past hatch day other than that it's await and see job if they are still viable but I think your cut off day is about Tuesday but it's still a hard call to make. if you go down the getting chicks route then you need to find a supplier fairly quick Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
