savena5630 Posted June 8, 2013 Share Posted June 8, 2013 One of my five lovely pekins just passed away She seemed a bit lethargic for the past couple of days, I kept an eye on her, gave her yoghurt, poultry spice, and everything else that I read was meant to be helpful, but this evening at 10pm I went to shut the Eglu door, and found her lying seemingly lifeless in the run. I managed to get her out and she was breathing, took her inside and put her in a cardboard box with hay, but she was completely still, with her head low and eyes shut, breathing slowly. I rung the emergency vet service, who were asking for £190 for a call-out. I decided to try the RSPCA, but whilst I was waiting to get put through, she took her last breath and passed away. I'm so gutted. These are my first chickens and I wish I could have done more to help her Can anyone advise me on whether I should take any precautions with the other 4 remaining girls? Purplemaniacs Posted June 8, 2013 Share Posted June 8, 2013 Sorry to hear about Martha. It is horrid when you lose a chicken but especially hard when it is your first. Chickens are very good at hiding illness to prevent the others picking on them. I have lost chickens who seemed fine and then suddenly were not well and died quickly, one that I hatched was fine in the afternoon when I got home from school but an hour or so later was dead in the run, that was a real shock as she was only a couple of months old.
