Old Speckled Hen
When to let mum and chicks out? They are in a standard Cube run with an Eglu inside it.Chicks are just over five weeks old.I have a small flock of six hens and a cockerel. They free range in a wooded area with lots of hidey holes and places to scratch. they can see each other and mum is desperate to get out. Is it too early? What do you lot do? L Marques
I let my chicks out with mum when they were only 4 days old but i watch them all the time and mine is a normal garden not a wooded area.

PoachedPlease
Tell us how it goes. My single chick was born today and I feel bad putting the mamma in a dog crate, when she can't FR. Can't see any other way to stop bossy light sussex eating the chick! Xx
Old Speckled Hen
Well mum got out into the garden somehow and spent who knows how long in Eden (lots of overgrowth/weeds etc). I last checked them at lunchtime. The five chicks spent the day free ranging with the rest of the flock. Only one of the hens is being a bit nasty.
