Is it something (else) to worry about ?? What should we do ?? I caught her eating it so moved her away quickly as (I think) I read somewhere that hens shudnt eat their eggs ?? redsunset
If your hens are new and young then it's perfectly normal. I have found one on my pavement/nest box and even a yolk intact in the past from new hens. Their systems take a wee while to settle into egg production. Mine are able to free range all day and have access to as much grit as possible but can still get softies when they are young and sometimes old as well I believe. I have only had my chooks a year and have had a few minor panics on the way but you learn a lot on here and just from observation. Started with 6......now have 25 as of today! paulad
ok - that's great = thank you they are young - we got them at POL a month ago so it sounds normal then We had 4 and have lost 2 in a month - so really struggling and worrying about everything at the moment - its been a steep learning curve thanks for your reply
jackian
Redsunset Is right they are practising . If it continues then it means they need more calcium. This can be helped by giving limestone flour which can be brought on the internet very cheaply ,a bit added to their food .I usually give it to them all it is easier that way and is a help to all of them.Another simple solution is cod liver oil ..not too much otherwise you gedt fishy eggs.Hope this helps ..Hang on in there it will be fine. gavclojak
Bless you, I always start my questions with....it's me again....by the sound of it we got our girls at about the same time. I also had an egg with a shell that was ridiculously soft, more like a beflated balloon, all I did was stop the treats for a few days and add oyster shell to there feed. Have had no problems since apart from the odd shell that is quite granular, hard and intact just a tad bumpy, I have put it down to one of those things. Good luck and I hopemyou get a break soon and then you can start enjoying them. X
paulad
thanks all yes I think we must have gavclojak - I have LOVED having them but its been far too stressful as well - had 4 and only 2 have survived - its been awful really. At least this egg thing doesn't sound like another problem - phew ! These chickens are more stressful than my kids !!
gavclojak
Haha I am with you on that one. I just left a big family BBQ to come home before they go off to roost, just so I can lock them in the cube! Everyone else is out and I am sat here on a chicken forum........
