debsiddle
Hi everyone, Wondering if anyone could help my poorly girl. Carol is on her third "chest infection" since May. She was treated with Tylan first time (for about 2 weeks - 1ml of a 0.5g/5ml solution a day), then a month later she started looking a bit off and laid a lash so treated with Clavaseptin for 7 days, then about 2 weeks later looked a bit suspect so treated all with 0.5g Tylan in 1 litre water for 5 days, and now she's crackly and coughing again, laid a very small lash and is puffed up. I have had her back to vet today who said she couldn't really hear any crackling in her chest, which I was really surprised at, and that her heart sounded OK, but because the other girls aren't coming down with anything she doesn't think it's an infection, but maybe an underlying heart/lung problem or a growth. Carol is about a year old, used to lay every day but hasn't since 7th May when she laid two soft shelled eggs. The vet has said to continue with the TYlan (she's been on it a week now)and has given me some Frusemide to help get the fluid off her chest. I also bought some clavaseptin as a back up. Her droppings are yellow and foamy now. Does anyone have any idea what this could be, or had any similar experiences? I was going to wait to see if the frusemide helped, but I'm wondering if I should just get her on clavaseptin. Any help/advice greatly received, thanks. good_egg
Are they all foamy yellow? I think sulphur yellow foamy poos can be blackhead? Otherwise might be worms - have they been wormed? if so what with? i''m not really sure just passing on things I've read til someone with more experience arrives! debsiddle
Hi, Yes they're all wormed regularly with Flubenvet - due in about a week (3 monthly). Gona ring Retfords again today about sending a poo sample. She seems a little brighter, and has eaten some meal worms, still laboured breathing though and a cough. Her poos look slightly better, not as wet, and it looks like she's passed some caecum. Debs
coco
Don't know about the poo but could the chest infection be down to lung damage. I have a cream legbar who I bought when she was about a year old. She hasn't laid an egg since I have had her and is quite often very rattly and has days when she will be off colour[ puffed up, eyes closed] She has been like this for about two years now and most of the time is fine. The vet could find nothing wrong with her and she has had tylan. I just put it down to the way she is, none of the other hens has been affected. I keep thinking I will just find her passed away in the run one day but she is still going strong.
gongladosh
if they're on bark chippings (which frequently have lots of spores), you can make big improvements by changing to hemcore/aubiose!
