ChrisP
From the end of November I'll have a couple of weeks where I'll have some time to go travelling/holiday somewhere. I'd prefer to go somewhere warm, not too pricey, with some amazing scenery, and be back in time for Christmas. There'd only be two of us, with relatively limited 'on-your-own' travelling experience. Does anyone have any ideas/recommendations/price ideas? Places I've been looking at include Cape Town, Chile, Peru. Thanks in advance! patsylabrador
A couple of thoughts gleaned from ES's experiences are firstly Japan. Not warm but he has had such great times there. All sorts of different experiences especially on northern island Hokkaido. He loved Tokyo too in south Japan. He's hoping to spend this winter in japan this year if they'll have him back. He once accidentally found himself in Samoa or it might have been Fiji. He stayed at a youth hostel and was met by someone wearing bananas whose first words were "fancy a beer mate?". He did. MS recently went to Sacramento on his own - my kids seem to travel best on their own - and fell in love with it. In California so it was warm but also holds a German style Christmas Market. I know he would absolutely say go there, he met some very interesting and fun people. He can't wait to go back. He found it easy to make friends because his English accent was an ice-breaker. One of his most bizarre conversations was in a diner when he found himself caught up in a group of tooled up riot police and they were saying they couldn't believe Met Pol aren't armed. Both ES and MS have had great times in these countries and I think the answer is to get away from touristy areas and package tours. MS and YS went to New York in early November and hit a heatwave. Loved it, met people although MS got mugged almost immediately. You live and learn. They're going back this November. That's it really, OH and I go to Germany every year for Christmas markets, not warm at all but sipping gluhwein and listening to cheesy music while it's snowing is my kind of heaven. In the past we've visited Europa Park which is a brilliant German theme park so this year we're going to their Christmas Markt which I think will be cheesy beyond cheesy, also visiting Trier and Freiburg.
