Advice please fellow Omleteers.

Have just order hardwood chips for the WIR for the winter, I use Aboise during the summer.

Have found 3 old bags un opened around the side of the greenhouse, when opened they seems to bit some mould on the chips, my question is do I need to throw these as they may damage the hens breathing, or is it safe to use them with the new on top?

Rather expensive to throw away, but better to be safe.

Hi Margaret,

Personally I wouldn't use them if they're mouldy. A couple of years ago we had a near disaster with a load of mouldy wood chippings from a local tree surgeon. All of our hens survived but they were ill for days (we spotted a problem with their breathing within an hour of them being exposed to the woodchips).
