Help! Broken egg inside hen

Recommended Posts

Hi ,

Would appreciate any help : I was watching my hens today & noticed a few taking an interest in my white hens bottom.

On checking her out, I can see lovely yellow yolk dribbling down from her vent. Also if I massage her gently around her vent area I can hear "crackling" broken shell sounds - It really seems that there is a broken egg inside her.

What's the best course of action : leave her alone? Try & get the bits out? Vet job?

Any thoughts appreciated as would hate to lose her if there is a solution.

Jenny :(

Its a very delicate operation indeed Jenny, getting bits of broken shell out without cutting the vent or pulling out the internals. Hopefully your vet will have removed it all or she has expelled it. Problem is compounded with other hens pecking at the area and any of ours with the same problem were taken out immediately. The vet may prescribe antibiotics as a precaution.

I hope it's all been sorted now - but if it's any help, I had exactly the same problem with one of mine. She was quite off colour for a while so took her to my lovely vet and she did a really good examination, eventually finding the broken egg. On with the rubber gloves and she gently cleaned her out, gave an anti-inflammatory injection and an antibiotic. Rosie took a week or two but is now laying daily again and right as rain. I hope yours does as well! Good luck.

Hi Everyone,

Well! The next morning I went to see how she was & she was strolling around as usual, bossing the others around (she is high up in the pecking order)!

There was no sign of the broken egg , and with a gloved, vaselined finger, I gently felt in her vent - nothing. I reckoned she has managed to expel the egg & bits of shell as there was most definitely a broken egg in her.

Rang the vet & he recommended a "watching brief". A couple of days later & she is still fine, so I think she dodged a bullet!

Thanks for the replies.

A very relieved Jenny
