My lovely princess layer had a trip to the vets today with egg peritonitis (another post)

 

While there I gave layer a little treat of corn and the vet asked if I was still feeding corn. I said I was and was told that the girls shouldn't be having corn in the summer as it pushes their body temperature up and it isn't good for them in the summer?

 

Does anyone else stop feeding corn in the summer?

Well I never knew that. I'm guessing as I'm on the opposite end of the country to you and 'summer' can range from 14-20 degrees maybe not quite so bad. I only give a tub between 34 so maybe that's ok? I suppose you lucky southerners who get 25 degrees plus have to think diff? My lot are looking for food constantly on account of pottering from 3am until almost 11pm right now so give melon and soft fruits now and then instead.

Corn does count as a treat and is fattening and warming. If fed in large quantities it can lead to fat girls/girls laying down a layer of fat internally and a drop off in laying. So, I would totally agree with the vet. The other component of mixed corn is usually wheat and this is less fattening. Personally I only feed a bit of straight wheat as a scratch feed from time to time either because I have to lure the birds back to the pen or in the depths of winter when it makes me feel better by giving them something warming overnight even though I know they don't actually need it

Thanks daphne, I know it can't be cured as such but I hope it can be controlled. As long as she has quality of life and is not in pain then I am happy x
