rabbitfluff
My greenhouse is getting up to 50 degrees some days and that's with a roof and 2 louvre vents open and sometimes the door too. Should I be trying to shade it at these temperatures to protect the tomatoes or are they ok with the heat? The leaves are curling a bit, which I think could be the heat? I'm more used to the opposite problem of trying to get as much sun on it as possible but in its new spot it gets the sun most of the day. Is the paint on shading any good? Thanks. sjp
only 50 degrees?!!! mine gone up to 120 degrees 2 or 3 times in the last couple of weeks with the door open but other than a expensive paint on shading I used a few years ago I've never had much luck with shading so now I don't bother but I don't close my greenhouse doors from May to October I,E. once my tomatoes get potted up. this year the doors they've been open 24/7 since Easter
Saronne
I am guessing she means 50 centigrade. That's pretty hot. 120 centigrade and the tomatoes would be turning into soup!
stu
Mine gets to about 45 and I don't worry about it at all. If you want to take advantage of the heat though... water the floor regularly... the toms will thank you for the increased humidity. If the leaves start and turn 'crisp'.. then I might put a partial shade for them, but not total. Ready made tomato soup doesn't sound so bad, but your sandwiches will suck big time
chickencam
I agree, leave the doors and windows open all the time at this time of year and keep the air moist by watering the path and soil around the plants and if you are using a hosepipe mist the plants at the hottest part of the day.
