Poultry Disinfectant

Recommended Posts

Hi Everyone

Just wondered what disinfectant/sterilising solution you use for cleaning the coop and feeders/drinkers.

I ave been recommended to use Virkon s and Nettex Viratec-P Poultry Disinfectant.

also, does anyone put there feeders/drinkers in the dishwasher? If so what do you use for cleaning solution in the dishwasher?

First clean out on Saturday!!

Thanks

Maryhen

HI Mary,

I wash out the coop with poultry shield very week and dust with diatom, and so far (several years) so good.

I confess I'm not so organised on the drinkers - some weeks I just rinse thoroughly. If the girls have had a happy time kicking dust and muck into it, I wash with washing up liquid and rinse.

Have fun

Debbie

any sort of dtergent or disinfectant is fine for the drinkers and feeders as long as they are rinsed thoroughly, if putting in the dishwasher just use normal dishwasher stuff. If wahing by hand then Flash is my choice of weapon.

For cleaning the coop week to week I dont think you can really beat Poultry Shield, its very good stuff and also kills red mite. Virkon is excellent for a really good cleaning session though

Hi I'm relatively new to chicken keeping but asked my grandmother as she has had them for years! She said don't bother using anything fancy (and not to mention expensive)!! A bit of elbow grease and scrubbing is sufficient! Sometimes she puts her feeder/drinker in the dish washer is she's lacking time to do it herself. Never had a problem so far with hygiene! A dusting of diatom won't do any harm either :D

I use poultryshield, diluted in a spray bottle as directed.

I do the coop most weeks with this and let it dry and regulalrly do the feeders and drinkers too - although now and again I just scrub and rinse instead.

I use Virkon S in my stable once or twice a year so will probably do an annual deep clean of coop too :) I don't think that it is necessary to use that regularly though :)
