Flowerpot
Hi Can anyone tell me if it is ok to let my girls eat the sunflower seeds that I put out for the garden birds, please? I had forgotten that I had just fed the garden birds when I let the girls out to free range and of course they ate them straight away once they found them. So far they seem fine but I could do to know if I have been fortunate this time or if they are ok with these type of seeds Thanks Flowerpot

Egluntyne
Yep, just now and then. They are fattening, and fat hens don't lay.
Claireabella
I think sunflower seeds are in mixed corn as well, so it should be fine in moderation I would think. They are such a worry when they eat something they shouldn't. One of mine ate a spider yesterday that I can only describe looked like a small crab Of course, she ran off with it before I could catch her and ate it in one . I worried all night about it but she is fine today, so I guess no harm done - just a sleepless night for me
jesschicken24
Just after I read your post Claireabella, I flicked onto my facebook home page where Springwatch have just posted a video about Garden Orb Spiders (they look like crabs to me). I'd noticed quite a few around this year too. Spooky! https://www.facebook.com/BBCSpringwatch?fref=nf
mullethunter
OH tried to move a big Orb spider to safety off a pavement a while ago. To repay him it bit him and it's fangs went in deep enough into his thumb so that it was hanging on there and wouldn't come off!
Egluntyne
It is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about for hens to eat all sorts of insects. It is what they do all day long when free ranging.
