most ducks need a bit more space than chickens and of course they need water. (people will tell you Indian Runners don't need a pond but mine are at their happiest splashing about)

Ducks are definitely messier than chickens - you can de poop the garden fairly quickly of chicken poo with a tesco bag and all that but it's a hosepipe job for ducks and then they come and splash about in the water! :D

Ducks are more noisy than chickens too although I believe that muscovies aren't as noisy as other ducks (?!) not too sure on that one. have also been told that they don't need a pond but the ones near us swim a lot so....

Our chickens are WAY more friendly than the ducks. The chickens come and tell you they want a cuddle but the ducks just leg it away quacking at you!!

You can of course have a house duck! You can get a little nappy thing that goes on them (see http://www.thegoosesmother.com/id47.html she'll happily ship from the US) and then they can come in the house. I have a friend who has a duckling wearing one of those and she says he's the friendliest pet she's ever had.

I don't think ducks are harder to keep than chickens necessarily but they are definitely messier and noisier. sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

on the up side, I wouldn't be without my noisy, messy duck and her two little ones - they are adorable and WAY funnier than the chickens!!
