The Dogmother
Best check with Lesley, they keep ducks. From what I remember, they aren't as easy as chooks though and they make an awful mess.
Caroline
most ducks need a bit more space than chickens and of course they need water. (people will tell you Indian Runners don't need a pond but mine are at their happiest splashing about) Ducks are definitely messier than chickens - you can de poop the garden fairly quickly of chicken poo with a tesco bag and all that but it's a hosepipe job for ducks and then they come and splash about in the water! Ducks are more noisy than chickens too although I believe that muscovies aren't as noisy as other ducks (?!) not too sure on that one. have also been told that they don't need a pond but the ones near us swim a lot so.... Our chickens are WAY more friendly than the ducks. The chickens come and tell you they want a cuddle but the ducks just leg it away quacking at you!! You can of course have a house duck! You can get a little nappy thing that goes on them (see http://www.thegoosesmother.com/id47.html she'll happily ship from the US) and then they can come in the house. I have a friend who has a duckling wearing one of those and she says he's the friendliest pet she's ever had. I don't think ducks are harder to keep than chickens necessarily but they are definitely messier and noisier. sorry to be the bearer of bad news. on the up side, I wouldn't be without my noisy, messy duck and her two little ones - they are adorable and WAY funnier than the chickens!! Lesley
I don't think I fancy a house duck - even with a nappy Ours run a mile as well - well, waddle. I love having them but they are nowhere near as friendly as hens.

Caroline
our mummy duck is SOOOOOOOO protective of the little (or rather, not so little) ones!!!! She bit me good the other night!! She'd been getting hold of my sleeves and tugging on them etc but then I went out in a t-shirt. Mistake - she got me good!!!
