Cat tails
Cinnamon is still laying an egg every other day. (Sweet heart!) And I thought she was very consistent. I have been suspecting for a long time that she has been laying every other day. Now Ginger and Nutmeg gave up eggs for winter, I know for sure. Untill today.... I got an egg from Cinnamon yesterday. So not expecting any today. *drumroll* I got two....! Who else is still laying?? Why can't they name stamp their own eggs... Would solve many mysteries! Beantree
Unfortunately you have to be there all day watching them Cattails. Or, as they did 60 years ago, employ a young boy to trap nest them and release, marking their leg banding on a chart given for that purpose. That was how they developed the heavy egg layers. By spotting them and adding them to the breeding programme. Sometimes there are fine differences between eggs and they can be seen. When we had just 10 the difference was clear, but now it is more difficult, although I could still name 16 from 20.
Cat tails
In the weekend I normally manage figure out which egg belongs to which hen, but during the week? Impossible... All three lay very pale brown eggs, but Cinnamons are slightly larger and Ginger often has tiny eggs. Ah well... I knew what I was in for with three identical pure breeds. I'm actually surprised I still get eggs at all! I think the Christmas lights might help though.
Cat tails
Three eggs today! Means that all three girls are back to laying eggs again! Silly little hens!
PixieDust
I know. Shortest day yesterday and it's the only day I get 2 eggs!
Mars
I am thinking of putting motion detection camera in the nest box to know who is laying and who is not.
Henny+penny
My first 3 chickens were Warrens and although I put coloured leg bands on them so we could tell them apart, the eggs were impossible. Now I deliberately have a mix of hybrids and pure breeds that lay different colours,it's so much easier, and pretty too.
