PixieDust
Not sure if Pixie is being pecked or something else is happening: Plus after examining her, both she and Lily had their tails down. Very odd as they were fine before and afterwards - they went for a dustbath together: Any ideas would be much appreciated.
gavclojak
The skin looks perfectly normal to me, doesn't look like feather pecking and I'm sure you can see the new quills under the skin. I can't see any signs of mites or bugs, maybe check the feathers around the vent Could just be normal feather loss and the new feathers will come throgh when she has a moult
mimi5
Is it her breast/crop area? She looks like she's been broody, my pekins do that all the time But I do see new feather quils coming through
PixieDust
Yes it is her crop and yes there are new quills coming. I had a budgie who did this once, many years ago. He just kept pecking out his chest quills after his first moult. I think he liked the taste of the blood They are being wormed at the moment. I can't see any lice and they go into the coop easily, but a few times I have caught Pixie with her tail down. However, mostly she is very perky. gavclojak
I have a girl who's tail goes up and down like a fiddlers elbow! Some weeks it's up some it's down....hens...always something to worry about!!
PixieDust
She only started the odd occasional tail down a couple of weeks ago. I started with the ACV and then yoghurt and now Marriages with Flubenvet. They finish on Sunday but they have had a couple of days when they have held out for treats and not eaten much. Ate everything since Wednesday though. Poos are firming up - Lily's was like a water cannon! And they desperately want out again - they enjoyed that! PickleHen
Oh this is exactly the patten and patch location of the feather loss of my chook that II posted about yesterday. Maybe it's a new season fashion tend I am going to keep an eye on her as I suspect there might be a chance my girl is broody. Always learning with these girls! PixieDust
Just been watching Lily pulling feathers off both Pixie and Winnie. I guess anti peck spray is in order? They have been on lock down and no treats for a week because of worming. Could this be the cause?
gavclojak
It could very we'll have been the cause as the treats prove a distraction. My girls have been wormed this week so have been somewhat stressed and a little vocal
mimi5
Yes they get a bit stir crazy cooped up (sorry ) no treats or free ranging So anti-peck would be good (the nettex one is good, but wear gloves and it proper stinks!) Just monitor the situation. Usual places for pulled feathers - neck and tail, oh and fluffy knickers
PixieDust
They will finish the bag of pellets during this week but as they have been on it for 7 days I will start giving them some treats. They have dug for Australia and pulled up all the membrane. We will need to re-lay it and add more sand in due course, but at the moment we are rather unsure as to if we are going to be moving soon or not. All to do with OH's work and quite rightly he doesn't want to spend money on anything that isn't vital at this time. I go in the run with "Rake" several times a week to sort things out. They will get a broccoli head tomorrow - lucky girlies!

Ha....have that
Cat tails
I'm quite certain the skirting of the Omlet runs isn't there to prevent foxes to dig in, but chickens dig out! In some places they are half way to freedom...
PixieDust
Lily was attacking Winnies bum earlier. She is a naughty girl. I have to go out tomorrow so they won't get any FR time. I might feed some boiled egg tomorrow just in case it is a protein issue.
