Lorax
Hello all. We have had a black orpington for a few months now. She seems to be losing A LOT of feathers, sort of under her wings and around her vent. She is laying fine. I can't see any replacement feathers. Thoughts of things to think of please? All the others seem fine.
mimi5
Have you check for mites? I believe there is a depluming mite?? Doesn't sound like a moult I guess keep an eye out as you are and check for new feather quills.
Beantree
I think it may be lice or possibly Northern Fowl Mite, which target the vent area normally. There aren't many feathers under the wings, but that is a usual area for lice. Certainly isn't normal moulting.
The Dogmother
Do check for lic and mites, but I am guessing that it might be seasonal moulting - Orpingtons get very hot as the weather warms up, and they tend to shed feathers on the breast area, under the wings, and sometimes around the vent.
