Hen laying two soft shelled eggs a day

Recommended Posts

My hens have only been laying for a couple of weeks and two of my girls are laying lovely eggs most days. My Light Sussex has had a few soft shells and for the last two days has laid two soft shelled eggs each morning. Is this just her body getting into the swing of things? They do have grit with oyster shell and have been wormed recently.

If she's young it's almost certainly that she's just getting into the swing of things. Two a day means the eggs are passing through her system too fast for the shell to be put on (not very scientific, but you know what I mean!) She'll almost certainly slow down over the next week or so and you should get one nice hard-shelled egg a day.

We have a young Buff Orpington who, when she arrived laid perfectly well. She went broody for the first time and it really messed her up. 3 months now and she is also laying two eggs a day. We get one with a good shell and a softy shortly afterwards. Her timing is out completely, so she goes into the nest box to lay and comes out having done nothing. A few hours later she will lay an egg in the run and the softy gets dropped off the perch during the night.

Well, normal service didn't last long. She then had a few day of laying softies and now hasn't laid for a few days. She's eating fine and seems healthy and my other two hens are laying lovely eggs most days. Is it still early days (she laid her first egg on 24 June), is she lacking something in her diet or is she just not a very good layer?
