brad0053
I have two hens (both 4.5 years old). Sadly one has died. They went everywhere together and I am worried that my remaining hen will miss the company, she has never been left on her own. I have read threads and the majority suggest they are better with company, than without and I certainly think it is that way with my hen. Should I introduce a couple of juvenile hens to her, or am I asking for trouble. Any suggestions gratefully accepted. Some context, she sleeps in an eglu and roams most days and weekends. She is 4.5 years old in good health and social able with her companion who just died. Regards
Chickabee
I would. Just take the intro slowly. You don't want them bullying her, or visa versa. Good luck
clucker1
I took on an older lone chicken earlier this year as her owner didn't want her any more anyway, I introduced her along with 2 point of lays to my existing flock of 7 chickens. It took some time, but it has worked and it was hard work. I think it would be easier for you as you'd only have 2 lots to merge. It took about 6 weeks for me to merge everyone together 24/7.... I do take it very slowly though as I don't want anyone being upset.
Beantree
I expect the two juveniles will accept her as top hen immediately, especially as they are going into new surroundings. We've recently introduced two youngsters to their mother. They were hatched in an incubator and reared in isolation so they are unaware of the relationship. They got bullied at first but have now mum has settled down and accepts them. The run was big enough for them to escape the bullying and we doubled up on feeders and drinkers anyway. Our neighbour bought two pullets for his remaining hen after the rest of the flock was killed by foxes. He just took them out of his car and put them straight in and they were fine. No bullying at all.
