Hi guys,

My three Sussex have now started to lay. One is laying HUGE eggs that are double whilst the other two are laying smallish eggs, sometimes a little bit mis shapen and sometimes the egg shell not formed at all. Is this normal for when they first start laying ? Also, they lay them outside in the run a lot. I try to make the house a cozy as possible but they keep strapping the straw out into the run leaving the inside bare.

Any suggestions ?

Have you tried auboise? They will have trouble moving that and it is in fact healthier for them than straw?

If they have only just started laying you will get odd shaped eggs until their lady tackle gets in to the swing of things and I'm sure the short/dark days at the moment are bound to be playing havoc with them.

they one laying doubles could also be laying the softies as the large eggs use up the available calcium faster in young layers personally I give mine a short course of life guard tonic when I get one laying doubles or softies it helps young layers bodies cope with the first few eggs it helps older birds as well
