Daphne
Does anybody have any experience with slate floor tiles? We have seen some quite natural ones (called riven slate) which as I understand it, are made from the natural splits in slate when it is hewn and made into tiles. We like them but are a bit unsure whether they are likely to 'splinter' even more when being cut and cause a lot of wastage. On a separate note, has anybody got large porcelain floor tiles (60cm x 60cm)? If so, were they difficult to cut because of their size and so cause a lot of wastage? Grandmashazzie
We had Chinese slate tiles in our last home, they also have that unevenness and they cut fine. Also OH tiled here many different types and they all cut well once he invested in a heavy duty ( trade ) cutter rather than a 'hobby' cutter. I will ask him the type when he gets back. sjp
best way to cut slate floor tiles is with a disk cutter either a proper tile cutter or a 4 and half inch angle grinder with a diamond tile cutting blade the later if you've got internal angles or odd shapes to cut the 2 x2 tiles are more or less the same as the smaller ceramic based tiles but it's easier to cut them with a disk cutter as above
