first hatch of the season 2nd hatch started

Recommended Posts

I've at last had a good hatch in June and under a 1st time broody. it's been a bit drawn out through first chick hatched Tuesday / Wednesday the 2nd one sadly got hatched by accident before it was ready I think the broody got a shock when the first one hatched and stood on the egg and then pecked the shell off I think she squashed the chick as well when I found it it was still alive but a bit out of shape and stuck to the bedding but it died shortly after 2 more hatched earlier today and 2 eggs have piped one hasn't done much since but is still alive the other I might have to help out in a bit some of the shell if off but the membrane is still in place

so far I've got one yellow full naked neck with a 'dirty' orange stripe and one full feathered black one with white wing tips and a large dull white head spot the one I lost was similar that'll be the cuckoo maran grand dad I'm hoping the yellow one has a rose comb then it's from the naked neck dottie cross not seen the 3rd one yet. I'm really hoping the only blue egg in the clutch hatches that's the one that's piped and hasn't done much more has none of the blue eggs from that bird were viable last year

as of yesterday tea time I've got 6 chicks hatched and 2 eggs still to hatch if their viable 4 hatched themselves 2 I had to hatch as the membrane had started to dry out plus I don't think the chicks had enough room to move in the eggs

7 viable eggs out of 9 is a good result for me this time of year just a shame that one chick/egg got squashed before it was ready to hatch

hatch one chicks are now between 7 - 10 days old 'mom's' a model broody and the chicks are coming on nicely and I reckon about 10 days further along than they should be confidence wise, at least 3 are jumping on moms back already and they already know that strawberries are a top treat (they get the very small alpine ones) after one mini treat

hatch number 2 started overnight or this morning 3 chicks so far 2 fully dry and fluffy one dry not yet fully fluffy 3 eggs to go I think one will be a failure through as it's cold, and I think might have died mid way through it didn't look right when I candled them Monday it's a spotty egg as well I don't get many off that hen that are viable, their normally clear at day 10

lost one chick 2 days ago not sure if it started to hatch early or the broody stood on it ( this is the most likely event )but I found one mangled part eaten chick this is a first for me and she's a second time broody

finally tally for hatch 2 is 5 from 7 the spotty egg surprised me and hatched the 7th egg was stone cold this morning so it got took out no distressing coloured chick in this batch just one fully feathered one and 2 from blue/green eggs just hoping they are both girls and they lay darker green eggs than they came out off dads a 1st gen.cuckoo maran cross

well my 2 hatches are 19 and 17 weeks old I've ended up with 5 boys a 6 girls 2 girls are 19 weeks old the rest 17 weeks other than one of the younger girls their all part naked necked one through only has 2 feathers on her neck like her great grand father so she'll end up a full naked neck once she's finished feathering up as she or one of the other will pull the 2 feathers out mind at least I can tell her apart from the 2 older ones as I've got 3 black pullets and 2 cuckoo pullets the 7th pullet is a full feathered cuckoo Maran Barnverder cross with some TNN and cream legbar in the mix evident by the little crest she's sporting and I think she's got a little bit of blue on her earlobes so I'm hoping for dark green eggs from her

2 of the boys are freezer bound that then will leave 2 interesting colored boys and one full naked necked boy at least one can stay
