Jen Pecked!

Recommended Posts

Hi, I am looking for advice please. I recently purchased 4 hens - all from the same place and all the same age. I noticed that one of the hens (speckle) was pecking at the other 3 which initially didn't concern me however - last Monday one of my hens died - she was fine in the morning but by lunchtime had died. Yesterday I then noticed that another one of the hens (Black hen) had what looked like a prolapse - i followed advice found on this forum and separated her etc when Ive looked at her it looked like the vent was healing as it wasn't as red or sore looking, but the other hen (black/brown hen) also has a very sore looking vent. I think its not so much of a prolapse but that the speckled hen is hell bent on bullying the other two hens. Ive now taken the step of taking the speckled hen who is doing the bullying out of the coop and into a box but that left me with a quandary as i have had to put the black hen back in the coop when she is not fully healed and I'm concerned that the other hen may now start pecking at her vent - I have absolutely no idea what to do and its fair to say I'm a bit stressed about the welfare of my hens ..... any ideas please!!!!

Only thing I can suggest is one of those beak things so she cannot peck at the others.

The name escapes me right now, sorry.

Add some other things to the run that they can peck instead.

Mine really enjoyed the outside of a cauliflower with a bit of cauliflower still inside the other day.

Cabbage, pecking blocks or maybe a treat ball will keep them amused too.

I hope that helps for now until someone else can help you.

Bumpa Bit?

I had a problem like this when I first got chickens. For us the solution ultimately was that we had to take the perpetrator back and exchange her for another chicken (this is after she'd caused serious wounds on one, minor wounds on another and also attacked me, drawing blood!)

I don't have much help to offer for how to stop the behaviour as in the end nothing worked for us, but I wanted to suggest/ recommend Purple Spray for any red or open wounds. It covers up the redness so the other chickens won't be as interested in pecking at it, and it's antiseptic too. It certainly saved our Henrietta back in Nov 2014! Her whole back and base of her tail was open, bleeding, it was horrific. But with the spray on she was fine to go back in with the others (having removed the evil perpetrator!) . The attack damaged her preen gland and left her with a patch where the feathers never regrew, and as a result she was never again the smartest looking of chickens but purple spray, I'm sure, saved her. Put tons of it on. The feathers will never look the same again but they will eventually moult and regrow and meanwhile she can sport a punk bum-do! Good luck.
